Happy Halloween
You Must be careful:
There is a red dog,
and there is a black dog.

 - I'm Back -
And actually it was all pretty much my own fault, although I think my ISP were fairly rude and lame in the way they handled it. Nevertheless, I have a directory at Warstrike now and will be moving there shortly. My thanks to Reaper and Peasant's Paladin for this. Greatest thanks to Cybrid however, who pimped the hell out of my scenario when I couldn't and offered me webspace at Warzone even though he knew I was joining Warstrike.

 - MORE BRAINZ! -
Cyb also wins the Scariest Zombie award for Dawn of the Dead. ;) If you don't yet know what Dawn of the Dead again, check here. We'll probably do it again today. Check the site again if you've already seen it as it's been updated with info on the new map. Thanks to everyone who came and played or helped last night. (Early Halloween morning, actually.) It rocked.

 - The Exodus Continues -
Turf and War have new homes, Chaos apparently has something lined up, and the Sheep Cloning Facility definitely has a new host, thanks to eblana.com's owner Scoochie--who you don't know--and SilentDragon--who you'd damned well better know! ;) Anyway, remember to clean up your favorite servers list today and get rid of the VIE servers except for the ones you'll want to play in til they go down. It'll make things easier for you after the directory server is gone, and save you the trouble (for a while) of manually updating your favorites.lst file.

 - More Later -
I'm updating minimally cuz I'm in a hurry, but I'll update again later and finish the site's Halloween costume. Props to DS98 for reporting from the SSCON, Hunter2 for doing a nice job filling in at PCGaming, and Chakotay for keeping his head above the water while dealing with 500 things at once. Hi to everyone at SSCON; hope you're having almost as much fun as we are. ;) We'll keep the light on for you but when you get back the damned heat will be OFF. :P

27 October 1998

The end is near!
Indifference, the plague that rules throughout this land:
omen signs in the shape of things to come.

 - Sites of the Final Call -

For those not yet in the know, the SFC is an alliance of Subspace pages dedicated to maintaining unity and order in the game once the directory server goes down. This is a separate issue from that of the VIE servers. While VIE is ending its hosting of zones sometime around the beginning of next week, a much greater problem exists in the taking down of the directory server, which supplies Subspace with information about new zones and zones with changed internet addresses. Unless we have some very good luck very soon, the Find Servers button will cease to work.

The Sites of the Final Call have come together in an attempt to organize and maintain information about zones as their IP information changes, and to educate players in the art of manually editng their favorite servers list. A number of requirements will be made to these sites, so that joining will not simply be a statement of sympathy but an actual job taken on by the webmaster: to update certain information on a regular basis. There are other requirements you need to know about if you'd like to join. (If you don't want to join we won't burn your house down or anything. For a while I was considering not joining.) Please check out the SFC Homepage at Warstrike, and definitely look to the Sites of the Final Call for new server information whenever it becomes available.

I'd like to thank Peasant's Paladin for starting this bandwagon and for the nod to the CFC. Both are much appreciated.

 - Take ur shit an' leave! -

Interesting that VIE UK would not confirm and End Day of October 31 for the VIE game servers. Permit me to make an inconvenient and depressing, but probably smart, suggestion: Assume the servers are going down in thirty minutes. Get your server files, save your news texts, and say your goodbyes NOW. The servers could be floating their way up to Zone Heaven by the time you make it back. Play it safe and take care of business immediately.

 - War Zone Dies Early -

It seems that War Zone has taken on a position of leadership in the continuing downfall of Subspace. Until recently, the zone had shown a disappointingly healthy player population. However, in the last week, seemingly energized by news of the upcoming removal of the VIE servers, the good people of War Zone have become among the most active and productive ruiners of this game, evacuating the zone with efficiency and enthusiasm that we Chaos and Turf players could never hope to match. While much of the Subspace community appears to be driven by less mature, range-of-the-moment concerns such as "fun" and even the dreaded "thrill of the hunt", it seems that, with their healthy focus on winning resets and on getting onto teams full of truly great players of computer games, with their forward-thinking "what's the point?" ethic and undying loyalty to self-promotion, rudeness, and cheating, the War Zone players have us all beat.

 - Sheep Cloning Facility Moving Soon -

I think I may have hosting lined up for the SCF, and may have the new zone up early next week. Like all divine creatures, Dolly will live on and thrive in Her exile. Watch this space for details.

 - Cybrid Returns! -

With luck, the News Dot Text at subspace.warzone.com should be back up by the time most of you read this. Keep ur eyes peeled.

Happy Birthday!
All I need is something good to feel alive.

- Very Very Important -

Visit these pages regularly and save their HTML to your hard drive. Consider mirroring the information. Show your friends how to edit their favorite servers lists. The most important thing anyone can do right now is forget about hosting for servers and concentrate instead on a much more serious problem: When the VIE servers go down, only people who read Subspace news pages are going to find and use these server lists. This is a minority of the VIE zone playership, and it needs to become a majority very, very soon, or this game will suffer an unprecedented and permanent loss of population.

If you run a zone, please consider posting this information either in your news.txt or within the map itself or its tileset. Spread the information far and wide, and quickly. This is an emergency.

 - Not my birthday. -

My dad's, rather. Who never ever reads this page! but what the heck. :)

 - Bad Link -

I screwed up my Quake Journal link yesterday. Sorry, to anyone actually interested in reading it and thanks to Slayer of Small Dogs for pointing this out to me.

News of the Day

All I need is something good to feel alive.

- Minefield Radio -

Nah, it's not the return of my tiny mp3 site. That'll have to wait until I have a faster computer and a faster connection and more motivation. Nah, this is the music page I wish someone else would write so I could read it, only I'm the one who's doing it. Life is funny that way. I was going to save this for the revamping of this page, which will consist of several parts including a music section, but I got excited cuz the new Mojave album is out, so I said what the hell and fired her up a little early. Suggestions are invited and welcome. Please note that this is not the Playlist section of the Minefield but a new, much more serious page about music which I will be keeping from now on.

    Welcome.

 - Quake Journal -

I am very iffy about making this public, because it is so newbie-ish, but I thought it would be an interesting thing to do, it's kind of cute I guess, and it might turn into something or at least be something to read if you're bored. It'll be part of my little Quake section, whenever I do a little Quake section, which might actually be the page I'm about to link to and not much else. Who knows. Warning! Read only if you play Quake and can tolerate my endless rambling. ;)

    Boo!

21 October 1998

Put away that cyanide tablet.
There's got to be someone we can trust out here among us.

- Unmitigated Disaster, Part I -

It aint over 'til it's over, folks.

First, let's remember who made Subspace and what the changed their name to. Harmless Games' sequel to Subspace looms somewhere on the horizon, and it is not vaporware. We have that to look forward to. And until then?

Warstrike and Warzone are organizing the major Subspace sites to maintain an updated, standardized url list so that we don't all get lost and aren't unable to find or add new (or returning) zones. There's talk of an alternate billing server in the future. The show will go on, and of course the player zones will reign, but certainly they will in time come to meet the demand for purist, Burst standard settings and maps in the same way that, over the last year, they have left the super zone ethic behind and responded to the demand for more intelligent games.

We're going to survive and we're going to have fun while we're doing it. My advice to anyone who is concerned about the game: Get involved. Keep abreast of news. Join a news team or start a personal page. Make a map or two. Start an archive. Write a fanfic. If you love this game, know that doing your part--even a small part--to keep it alive, and to keep the community tight and fun, will extend the life of the game.
This could turn out to be a positive thing, when all is said and done--but don't just think on the bright side; help us build one.

- Proof That Baudchaser Is a Nicer Guy Than Me -

From todays update to iNet news:

My personal opinion on selling a game that is Internet Only, and then closing down the only way people can play it, thats the biggest swindle/zwendel/svindel in MPOG history. Luckily the Subspace pilots don't have the money to sue VIE for their $20 back.

It's called a class action lawsuit. ;) Here in America we've gotten really good at suing people. Frankly, though, I'm not so sure it's a bad idea in this case. Oh yeah, but I forgot that I agreed to their stupid user license just by opening the instruction book. In fact, by even thinking about Subspace I have indicated my agreement to thank VIE daily for making it possible for me to play a game I bought from them.

Moral of story: User licenses are figments of the imagination, and we may have a legitimate complaint against VIE.

- Big Ol' Update Imminent -

I'll be spending the next few days making this site into what it really should be. Bear with me as I will probably crash your browser a few times. ;) Look for lots of new content very soon.
17 October 1998

Hold on.

This place is old, it looks just like a beat up truck. I turn the engine but the engine doesn't turn.
It smells of cheap wine, cigarettes; this place is always such a mess. Sometimes I think I'd like to watch it burn.

- Been Busy -

I'd hoped to have the new design up by now but it's proven to be fairly difficult to put together, and I've been too busy with school and too careless with free time to get it done. So there'll be a few more updates here before I get that all worked out.

- Is Stephen King Off Topic? -

I guess so but who cares. :) I have to respond to Cybrid's mention of Apt Pupil, which comes out in a week. I have been psyched for this movie for a long time because the director is Bryan Singer from The Usual Suspects, one of the true badass movies of this decades and one of the finest crime-suspense films ever made. This movie is already regarded as a classic. (It's rated #9 on the IMDB, right between Raiders of the Lost Ark and One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.) And it deserves its reputation well. Make a point of seeing it if you haven't already.

Stephen King's Different Seasons has actually been made into three movies, now--the third being Stand By Me, which was based on The Body. It's actually a terrible movie, but I thought I should mention it.

The most exciting news for me, however (which I only just learned because I needed to look up the screenwriter credit for Apt Pupil) is that Bryan Singer and The Usual Suspects writer Christopher McQuarrie are doing the X-Men movie. (Talk about production hell!) Woo! I don't know how reliable this information is, but just see one of Singer's movies and you'll be jazzed too.

- Quake III Arena -

Sorry about the bad link the other day. I'm informed that the screenshots are back up on PlanetQuake, though for the life of me I can't find them. It doesn't matter because the new PC Gamer is now out on newsstands and you NEED a copy of this issue. Page after page after page of the most amazing and beautiful screenshots ever from any game, tons of information about the way the game will work, the word on skin and map editing--the single image of the map editor is going to give me nightmares--and interviews with John Carmack and Todd Hollenshead. Tons of text, huge screens. This game is going to destroy everything else you could probably think to name. Get informed and start drooling. ;)

- Julius joins the CFC; unholyone stays on as well -

While both Julius Caesar and unholyone remain retired from Subspace, unholyone has let me know that he plans to continue on in the CFC.

As far as CFC projects go, I WILL DEFINITELY help you guys...(And I will prolly help you with most things, just not as unholyone oranything like that...I have pretty much burned out on actually playing subspace, but I feel loyalty for the community)

Julius, meanwhile, has actually joined the CFC since retiring from Subspace and will be working with us on a number of projects. It should also be noted that he has a new alias.

ive changed my name on the internet to Xael... julius was just too
unoriginal and i had too many clones, so in SS/IRC/quake wherever,
i will be Xael, ok? so 'Xael' is joining CFC, not julius :)

- The Romulans Working on Mapfolio -

The Romulans has so many maps he can't seem to find them all. Nevertheless, he is working on what should become the third, and most ambitious, full-blown portfolio of Subspace maps. If you've ever read the level reviews in the Map Vault of the Mapmakers Guild, you can probably imagine that this will be quite interesting to read. The Romulans is far and away the most prolific mapper in the game, so expect a lot to look at. I'll be linking to this as soon as it's done, so keep an eye out.

Speaking of the MMG Map Vault, Rom is also spiffing that up and you should probably see an update within the next few days.

Breaking News!

The mapfolio is actually done but needs a few changes made to it. I will tell you now it's a superb presentation that goes past where mine or Gommy's has gone--part restrospective, part map guide, and part autobiography, with a lot of insight and history and a lot to read. I am humbled. Check back here soon as I will be linking to it the minute the finished version goes up.

And here it is.

- Does Electronic Arts Suck? -

Thanks to my homey Golbez over at the kickass MPOG.Com for the heads up on this sinister and troubling new development...one which may indeed affect the Subspace world at some time in the future. The PlanetQuake Community Rant for October 4th tells the sad tale of EA's acquisition of Virgin, and what has happened to Thrill Kill because of it. Corporate greed? Executive creative interference? We should be so lucky. EA has tossed out the completed Thrill Kill for far more despicable reasons--and it gets worse.

- Cafe Eblana: The Game -

That's right. Dariakus of the mighty Space Police is working on the first Eblana game. It was originally to be a port of the first Final Fantasy game, meant simply as practice on his way to making his own full-blown RPG, but now the Final Fantasy motif has been more or less thrown out, and it is becoming an original Eblana adventure--and not in a silly way, either. This is to be a serious game. No telling when it will be done, but Dar is in early stages of building the engine. Ashen is doing artwork and I'll be helping with story and puzzle design. Jarkom will be aiding with programming and just about everything else. We'll put up something for this pretty soon, just for fun.

I normally balk at online projects like this, as they are usually haphazard and naive, and never seem to amount to anything. I don't feel this way about the Eblana game, however, because it is Dar's game, and Dar has shown remarkable ability to actually finish things he starts. ;) Plus since it's intended mainly to be a learning tool, if it's never finished at least something good should come out of it.

Ahh...but it WILL be finished. Fear the Cafe. }:)

- Quake III Arena Screenshots!. -

They're out and they're up. Damn I envy the Quake community's enthusiasm and efficiency. These are some of the most incredible screenshots I have ever seen. In fact, I would be awed to see textures and structures like this in real life. Honest. Thanks to Golbez for this tidbit as well. (Gol is an old Subspace retiree. He waxes nostalgic about flying with rodvik and Rincewind sometimes...it's sad. Snicker.)

- Upgrade Time -

Well I installed that hard drive, tried to install NT but gave up so instead I finally dumped my falling-apart old Memphis 1410 (sigh) along with its broken rightclick functions, non-support for Iomega drives, and (I'm serious) crashing shutdown operation...all sacrificed to the beast Windows 98. I risked the Memphis build because Win95 crashed constantly--eight times in one day was the final straw--and it was indeed faster and more stable despite some ongoing problems. Win98 is much much faster, everything is flashing and zipping around at my whim. I feel like I have a brand new computer. To hell with the enemies of Windows. I'm in love.

In that spirit, say goodbye to the current Minefield format. This is the last update you'll see looking like this. It'll be pretty much the same only without all the silly links that have been here since the page started. It should be handier when I'm done, and probably a bit more interesting to look at. Don't worry, I'm not using a black background. ;)

- New James Cameron Newsletter -

I get this periodically in my mail. A lot of people don't know about this because there are so many worhless JC pages around....Titanic pages last updated a year ago, etc. I've mirrored the new issue here for now sinceit's not up yet at the website, but look there for older issues. In the meantime, here is the new issue.

- New Current 93 Album -

Their new album just came out. It's characteristially beautiful, although very, very simple....nothing but pretty, muted piano tunes with David Tibet's trademark talk-singing. The band is definitely not for everyone, and this album is probably right for even fewer people, but I had to mention it because they rule and a new full-length from them is a major event in my book. I consider their 1992 album Thunder Perfect Mind one of the finest albums ever recorded. (Anyone want to lend me 80 megs of webspace for a while?) The new album is called Soft Black Stars.

- Subspace hit by wave of angry retirements. -

I'm surprised not to have seen this headline yet; to me it all seems unavoidably jarring when taken as a whole. Are we avoiding the point, or does each news page simply run with a different crowd? I hope we don't have another week like this one anytime soon. A quick breakdown of recent retirements:

unholyone quit the game and left the CFC early last week, citing lag, cheating, and loss of fun as reasons, each on many counts and after much apparent frustration in trying to live with the problems.

Julius Caesar sent out an arguably angry ICQ message, explaining that after his game became corrupted (as is common for many people), he opted to delete his directory rather than reinstall. "It's awfully sudden, I had to clean-out my recyle bin right there before i changed my mind... I didnt want to quit, but its best for me I guess, I wasted too much time on that damn game anyway." While for the most part his leaving seemed to be in good-to-lukewarm cheer, the abruptness of the act and curtness of the goodbye messages and posts confirm recent remarks that Julius had become frustrated with the game to the point of losing interest.

In the most widely reported departure, dgus hung the whole lot of us out to dry, and frankly came off as well beneath his reputation, complaining of "a mostly ungrateful, whining, immature SubSpace community", remarking that his zones "have been stolen repeatedly", and ending with a special thanks "to the general SS community for CONSTANTLY reminding me how flawed human nature is, and how stupid the general public is."

Following the closure of Subspace.Net, Rift left the game, vowing to erase his identity entirely. Quoting from the Warstrike story: "I am removing all references to 'Rift' from the internet. Including email addresses, ICQ uins, and soon - SubSpace itself." CybeRise announced his retirement only days later.

On a more satisfying note, if not necessarily a more positive or cheering one, Shanoyu appeared on the Warstrike Message Board the other day, voicing a remarkably vicious and long-overdue attack on the recent cacophony of bitching and moaning in the player zone scene. It's not a nice message but I'm proud to be a squadmate of its author. Go Shan.

- Battle Turf Is Up -

The Sheep Cloning Facility is featuring Arctos' fab new tiny turf map and a fun 20-man fight. This is the first brand new Arctos map since April; what the hell are you doing playing anywhere else? ;)

- We're #2! -

The backstabbers at DS98 are attempting to steal my long held position as the second best Subspace page. Why they would want to give up their share of a tie for first best page is beyond me, and will be treated as a hostile act. I've passed up many an offer to join the Council of First Best Pages in order to entrench myself in second place, and I'm damned if I'm going to share the position with one of you upper-tier fancy pants! If you think I'm going to take this lying down, you're in for a big surprise.

- CFC Second Phase -

Phase two will be ready tomorrow. It will be small and unassuming with almost no drain on your CPU. You can do it offline while you are asleep, even, and it'll bring notoriety to the game plus help make the whole world a better place. If you can guess what the hell I'm talking about, you win a slice of the ever-growing tie for best Subspace page. ;) Keep your eyes peeled for details. Third Phase is right on its heels, almost ready to go, and that one will be an epic, hellish quest through time and space for you all to sink your teeth into...

Cult of the Final Call

- Lolita is finally out! -

All possible props to Showtime and the Samuel Goldwyn Company for finally getting this movie into American theatres--a ballsy move which I do not take lightly and am very thankful for. It is beautiful, moving, classy movie--wonderfully acted and photographed, and directed in such a way that I was totally drawn into the movie. Ennio Morricone's score is one of his best and accents the story's development perfectly, although it is mainly atmospheric and in a background capacity.

- Last Summer at mars Hill is finally out!. -

Elizabeth Hand's new book, a collection of short stories and novellas, came out sometimes within the last week or so. She's kind of sick and weird, but then that's one of the things that makes her my favorite writer. The main draws, however, are her dark and beautiful visions of future and the vivid, poetic descriptions and streams of consciousness in her books. Check out the first few pages of Winterlong sometime and you'll see what I mean.

- Lame. -

Ripped from the IMDb Studiobrief...

Acting on complaints by major film studios that U.S. movies on DVD discs ("Region 1") were being sold in Britain ("Region 2") in many cases before the films were released theatrically there, the U.K.'s Federation Against Copyright Theft (FACT), along with local police, raided at least two large DVD retailers last weekend, confiscating their supplies, according to local reports.

- AFK -

If I vanish off the face of the earth for the next week or so, it's because I'm about to install a second hard drive and I have absolutely no idea what I'm doing. Wish me luck. :)

- World War III said to be pending over A Small War Zone -
(um....who the fuck cares?)

- You knew I was going to tell you about my roots sooner or later. -
I was thinking yesterday about the levels I made for The Ancient Art of War and Lode Runner and whether or not there is a chance in hell that I could get them off of the rotten 5.25" floppy disks they are (or were) on, when it occurred to me that player editing of levels really goes back much further than that, to Atari Adventure. I'm not just mentioning this to brag that I was the world's first level editor though ;) but to see if anyone else out there did it. If you have not played Adventure, it was the first-ever overhead view adventure game. If you can imagine The Legend of Zelda but with a square cursor for your character (this is not a joke) and only five sound effects (six if you include the buzzing that sufficed for music on the Atari 2600). There were three dragons, a bat and a castle. Wait, I know, here's a screenshot. :)
-
-
Anyway, like nearly all games for the Atari 2600, Adventure had multiple games to choose from within the game. Game 1 had only 13 rooms, two castles, and two dragons, and was for sissies. :) Game 2 had the hardcore 31 room map, an extra, harder dragon as well as an additional castle, and a bat that liked to steal stuff from you at the worst possible moment. Game 3 was the same as Game 2, but with all the objects (yes, all seven of them) starting in random positions on the map, as well as the dragons.

So here's the catch. By hitting Reset (actually it was a toggle switch; sigh), as opposed to just turning the game off and on again, you restarted the game as-is. By this I mean that when you died you didn't have to start over, but rather you returned to the start position with all the items where you left them and the dragons resurrected...and thus the Atari Mapmakers Guild was born! No, you couldn't mess with the map, but what you did was kill the dragons, hide all the items, lock the castles and hide the keys, then move the dragons around by grabbing the bat and coaxing him into picking them up. (Yes, he did have to be coaxed.) Then you did something nasty like lock the bat in the yellow castle with the sword so that immediately upon reset he would fly away with it.

That all took quite a while, especially since everyone sucked hard at Atari for some reason.

Now, you let your friend or little sister back in the room, hit reset, and sit back and watch while they try to figure out how your savage, diabolical mind works.

Adventure would rank with the all time greats anyway, but this little trick is why it remains, in my opinion, among the top five while the rest of the pre-Zelda nonsense went straight to hell. Adventure is in fact still fun to play. I'm sure there must be a few other games where you did this, Back In The Day. If you have war stories please send em in. :)

Always the one to start an uproar, allow me to be the first Vangel to publicly offer pirated software on the Web. >:) Craig Pell made this knock-off for the game a few years ago, and Atari's lawyers actually kept him waiting for two years without giving him permission to put it out. (These were, um, simpler times.) Eventually he renamed his version Indenture and released it freeware. As a bonus, it includes a special 300-room version with a few extra items, a new dragon, and two new castles. Craig Pell is a minor deity; send him a dollar one of these days when you're locked out of your house and bored.

    Indenture, so sue me!

And of course, you know the Minefield is always on the cutting edge of the emulator scene, so here is the rom.

    Adventure. Keepin' it real!

It's a no-no to distribute roms with emulator programs so I won't post one here, but you can probably find a good one at Dave's Video Game Classics.

    All hail Warren Robinette.

- The new PJ Harvey album is out. -
About a week ago, I was waxing poetic about the single A Perfect Day Elise. Well, the album came out today (erm, Tuesday), and like a good little fanboy I was there at 10:00am for my copy. (I might have been there at the stroke of midnight if I hadn't been too tired.) Well guess what? it SUCKS! They ruined A Perfect Day Elise and the album is otherwise about 70% horrendous, songless mess. I am very disappointed and a little shocked. There are four or five good songs out of twelve.

- Stupid Crap Part I -
One of several reasons we don't usually let forvrin go outside of Eblana.

- Stupid Crap Part II -
(courtesy of and thanks to jimbobwey)

    1) Start with the given:
     CUTE PURPLE DINOSAUR
     2) Change all U's to V's (which is proper Latin anyway):
     CVTE PVRPLE DINOSAVR
     3) Extract all Roman Numerals:
     C  V    V  L    D  I   V
     4) Convert into Arabic values:
     100  5   5  50   500  1    5
     5) Add all the numbers:
     666
     Thus, Barney is the Anti-Christ.
    SEND IT ALONG!!! hahahahaha

- Subspace? Huh? -
Sorry I've been a bit out of the loop lately and not updating. I've been getting more and more hooked on Quake II. The other day I was talking with jimbobwey, mighty Subspacer and friend to all sheep, and we were talking about the intensity of some of the battles in Turf, and I realized why it is that I don't play a lot of Subspace anymore: All Subspace games fail in comparison to Turf. When that game is in full swing and you have a good team and are fighting a good team in a great map, there is no match for it, even among the finest fights War Zone has to offer.
The nonstop action, the close-knit teamwork, the length and breadth of the fights and the opportunities this generates for flanking, sneakiness, and siege scenarios where you are pinned down for minutes at a time by a superior force, awaiting backup, biding your time while the flanking party rounds a huge map detail and swings in to snadwich your enemies...THAT is Subspace. C5 of the old VIE map, and the entire bottom section. C3 of the General Rage map, and countless sections of GiGaKiLLeR's level. These are classic, hardcore fights, the best that Subspace has ever offered. Call it a simple game, call it too biased towards tunnel ratting, but have you ever experienced a thirty or forty-five minute battle in War or Running or Chaos? I think not. And who knows what amazement might come out of Chakotay's Circle Turf in a large arena, or Giga's new map.
As I lose interest in Chaos and the other zones, and find myself completely numb to the fact of War Zone's move to a sever where I am not constantly forced into spectator mode, I realize that no game will likely ever match the excitement, suspense, surprise, and drama of a good Turf Zone freq war.
I must thank jimbobwey for causing me to realize this, and it may actually lead to my playing Subspace on a regular basis again. I plan to be more active in Turf now than I have been, so look for an update to the FAQ and maybe a gude to the game in the near future. Who knows, I may even try my hand at a map. Talks are commencing between Turf Classic and the Sheep Cloning Facility with the end goal being a funky scenario in a small map. Giga's new one is of course favored, but I am hearing tell of a small Arctos map in the works...hmm! :) As always, keep ur eyes peeled...

- Return of Oldschool, Part III -
Well, perhaps it's wishful thinking on my part, but while it seems the zone will be by nature fairly progressive, Mine GO BOOM's new server at VIE looks to me like the return of Philosophy Club.

What's this? Blackie gave someone ownership and actually told them about it first?? ;) It's true. Head on over to Shanky and check out the preliminary plans for the Sheep Cloning Facility's new nemesis...and be sure while you are there to VOTE PHILOSOPHY CLUB!

The Form ov the Hoof wills it and commandeth ewe.

I left my gay template stuff at the bottom of a story. Sorry. :)

- This might come in handy. -
I'm the best mix tape maker ever, but I'm kind of retired from the business. :P However, since I've owed someone a tape for a while I had to break out the ol' tools. This may seem a bit obsessive compulsive to some people, but if you're the kind of person to whom song order matters and cutting something off at the end of a side is a crime, you might find this to be helpful. :)

- MMG Updated Again! -
It's been quite a struggle through the process and formalities, but Shanoyu (ov the might Space Police!) has finally joined the Mapmakers Guild. For the full story check the MMG. Shanoyu's newest map is currently up in War Zone East.

- WSL -
It's probably too late to remind you, but don't forget that the WSL event is tonight. :) Check here for the rules, or look at my news archive a couple days ago.

By me, no less. :) Not a whole lotta update, but a bit about General Rage rejoining, and The Romulans has been spicing up the Vault areas.

- Xirphoid returns...sort of. -
Xirphoid, trapped semi-offline for a while due to computer troubles, just contacted me and let me know he has got ICQ up and running on the machine he's been using at school. Hopefully this will allow him to be a little better tuned in to what's happening around Subspace. He hasn't got access to his old ICQ list, so you will need to re-add him and resend anything you might have mentioned to him over the last few weeks. Keep it brief if you can, as he usually seems pretty short on time when he is on.

- Trench Wars III -
This has already been widely reported, of course, and I think I wrote about it a little here. SilentDragon's scenario ran very nicely on Saturday although half the signups didn't show for it. We replaced them readily with people who wandered in. ;) As I mentioned before, the current trench wars game is loosely based on what we did in that scenario, but one aspect of the scenario has not been included, because it could not be; it required manual flag resetting because there is no "victory" in a Turf game. We'll definitely be playing with this more in future scenarios, though: The goal of controlling all the flags in a map. With proper balancing of the bases, this isn't quite as unviable as it may sound. Bases with heavy defensive advantage, but requiring much in the way of personnel to hold, create the problem of when do you weaken your defense in favor of a strong attack? This has of course always been a problem in War Zone, but with this game style it is the only problem. I can see it being a lot of fun given the right amount of people and the right map. Anyone want to give it a shot? :)

- Music? What's that? -
Picked up some great new stuff yesterday. First good day at the record store in quite a while, frankly.

Incredible new single by PJ Harvey, A Perfect Day Elise. Probably you've heard this already if you are lucky enough to live near a decent station, but what's encouraging about the singles (despite there being two of them, kind of a ripoff) is that the b-sides are pretty strong. I'm expecting the new album, released next Tuesday, to be amazing. Flood, a favorite producer of mine who also worked on her last album, has returned for this one and you can definitely tell from the style of the single. Abrasive yet beautiful.

In a Doghouse, a new compilation from Throwing Muses. For all the clout, corporate support, and alleged artistic integrity of 4AD, they never had the sense to bring the first Muses album out in the US. This 2CD compilation on Ryko does that and much more, making available again for the first time in a decade their acclaimed Chains Changed ep. Also included are their original self-released cassette and five very early (1983) songs recorded in 1996. A gem, really, and only $18.

Form and Function by the incredible Photek, a pioneer of drum-n-bass music with a classy, clever style that has not been successfully imitated. This is a compilation of remixes, old singles, and a couple of new tracks. If you like listening to music while Subspacing and have never heard Photek, I must give this stuff my highest recommendation. Fast beats, mellow but sinister atmosphere, and moments of harshness rising up out of the dark, funky and spacey at the same time. A better known track I would compare his music to is the Graham Massey remix of Björk's "Cover Me" off of her Telegram compilation. (This, incidentally, is the best Subspacing track EVER.) If you want a whole album of that sort of thing pick up any Photek release; it is all very solid.

einexile wasted his entire summer...

    a) shooting 90% of a movie he no longer wishes to complete.
    b) participating in fruitless discussions on Subspace message boards.
    c) not getting enough sun or caffeine.
    d) seeing 20th Century Fox's movies in a theatres instead of on TV where they belong.

Oh well, maybe next time. :P

- Trench Wars III -
Yup, that's what we're calling it. New map by SilentDragon, designer of the original Trench Wars Castle you know and love. Settings that encourage longevity and greening and more specials than you can shake a stick at. :) Only in the Sheep Cloning Facility. SilentDragon is zone owner for the duration and will be tweaking it to perfection throughout the week. Be sure and head in there when the zone is active as it is a very fun fight.

- Eblana News -
I've left the Space Police as squad captain. m0us3 will be taking my place, and SoSD (Slayer of Small Dogs, a.k.a Puppykiller) will be maintaining the new page.

We're doing sort of a recruiting drive right now. If you think you may be Space Police material, have a look at the Pocket Guide to Space Law.

Most importantly, there is now an eblana.com, proving that we, like everyone else with a vanity domain, are extremely important. ;) Thanks to Scoochie, who does not play Subspace, for setting this up. For those who dare ask, "What the hell is Eblana?", now's yer chance.

Oh yeah, and we're now the official most popular channel on irc.dal.net because we cheat at javascript voting more effectively and more passionately than both #square and #SStrax...whatever the hell those are. ;)

And finally some good news...the immortal Prophet Murasame has updated the Official Home Page of the CCCP. This actually happened a while ago but since he updates monthly I'm not that late in reporting on it. ;)

- Rod/Jolly -
Turns out this map was not a labor of love or sign of respect at all, but just a matter of "shaving off the rough edges". That map had no rough edges, Jolly. You did something great and don't even realize what it was. Oh well.

Play in this map while you can because it is going down SOON. The Battle Drone may be going back up as I write this, for all I know. The Rod/Jolly map has the finest set of tunnel systems in the entire game, so if you are a tunnel rat definitely don't miss it.

- Happy Birthday! -
To my evil friend Pl0k, who doesn't play Subspace cuz he's in Australia and addicted to chess, but reads my rotten pages anyway.

- Speaking the Unspeakable -
I'm a day late on this, but not if you consider that the rant in question was long, long overdue: a shout out to SubSpecies at DS98 for telling it like it is about League. It's about time someone had the balls to state the bleeding obvious, and I am behind you 100% bro.

- Mapfoilio Update -
For those who are interested, I updated my mapfolio, adding a couple of small maps, changing one, and rewriting a bit. Only for the hardcore, of course.

- Really Old Map Up in Chaos East -
In a related story....well, as the saying goes, if you don't have anything nice to say...

16 September 1998
And then there were none.
Hey creepos, I'm talking to you. I've got a message to give to you.
You've got a problem, we know, but there is something you ought to know.
-
- Sabbatical -
You know what they say. If you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all, so I deleted most of this story and you will never read it. :P I'm going to be taking a little break for maybe the next week or so. If I play or update, it's going to be because I want to, not because I feel like I have to. That's been my main reason for the last two weeks, and I don't need that kind of negative energy floating between me and this game. When I finally retire from this game, I'm going to be the Friendly Jaded Vet. It will be me playing Alpha Zone all day long and writing here about what I did that day. Think of the next week or so as a sneak preview.

- Applause -
My congratulations and admiration to Chakotay for giving his rotten Vangels their walking papers. No offense meant to anyone here, but it's about time. Funny, four months ago an election for a fifth Vangel of Turf Zone was called off because it sparked such a huge flame war on the messageboard there. Where did all that energy go? I don't know who I'm quoting here, or if I'm just paraphrasing about a dozen people or so who I've spoken to or read, but it all sounds pretty much the same. "The Vangel thing didn't quite turn out the way it was supposed to." Well, why not? What changed? Did someone stop us from running our zones? Did someone punish us for helping new players and writing FAQs and changing maps?

Hell no. The Vangel thing worked out fine. What didn't work out was our fuzzy little imagined ideals of what Vangels were going to be. All this time you were hearing "worries" about Vangels getting harrassed, we secretly wanted it. It makes us hopping mad that after Blackie knighted us we were still just normal everyday players with no power whatsoever.

Why didn't the Vangels work out the way they were supposed to? Frankly, because they didn't do their job. With the possible exception of the people running War Zone, the best Vangels in this game work for me--and they cause me so much grief I want to pull my hair out. It's a lot of fun most of the time, trying to organize a group of people to work for a cause. It's like pulling teeth but it's a bit of fun. Does the Vangel system have to fail? Hell no. And I'm going to prove it to you.

- THIS ZONE SUX -
I'm pretty glad that the 8:00 Rabbit Chase games didn't work out in Sheep Cloning Facility, because I hated them. I think that's what caused me to become so pissed off at this game over the weekend. I spent between five and ten hours playing a game I have grown to hate, in a map I used to love but which is now a shell of its former self. I'm talking about the Rod Humble Chaos West, known in some forms as Rod/Jolly. My favorite map ever--when it was full of people. In an arena of ten or twenty players it is a corpse.

The front runners for the next Chaos East map appear to be mine and Shanoyu's. I'll be alternating these throughout the week. Game time is still 8:00pm Eastern. Don't come early and burn out on the game please. Mine goes up first because right now I never want to see another set of walls joined at right angles for as long as I live. ;) It'll be straight Running style flags--no timer, no upgrade. There will be a hell of a jackpot though, as usual.

- A scenario in Sheep Cloning? You jest! -
That's right. While I've been bellyaching about the other scenarios and pushing dates back, Silent Dragon up and put together a Trench Wars scenario which will be running this Saturday. We are getting a hell of a lot of signups on short notice, and very few of them from the player zone quarter just yet. Right now there is no player limit, but there's going to be, and it may be a sudden decision. Sign up now and get on board before Silent Dragon closes the singups.

    Trench Wars Scenario

- REPEAT -
Game time in Sheep Cloning is 8:00pm Eastern. If you are in a Vangel position here, please note that my admiration of Chakotay is at an all time high today. See story above.

Come, let's take flight; let's quit this scene tonight,
Whilst they sleep on endless, in their wrecked designs.

- Xirphoid Stranded on Earth. -
Apparently he's got about $600 worth of repairs to make to his computer or has to build an entirely new one. Until then he is limited to a few minutes worth of mail a day on a school's machine and not much else. If anyone needs to get a message through to him, please contact me.

- Murasame is God. -
Even though he's not much of a squadmate anymore. ;P
I've been wanting to post this for a long time but always ended up feeling like it would be stuck in a huge update. Today, a tiny Minefield update, and Mura's killer article. This was written for the second issue of The Minefield Weekly, which was never put out. I will be posting other such submissions soon in the future. Please note that this was written a while ago and is in no way a parody of Baudchaser's superb article posted yesterday at subspace.inet.fi. (Details in next story.)
If you don't fall out of your chair reading this, you have no soul. ;)

    Subspace: A Retrospective  by Murasame

- Baudchaser is up there too. -
This has been widely linked to by now, but I wanted to mention it here because I consider it a major document in the history and politics of this game, and it is also just a plain good piece of writing. Don't miss it.

- Events for Saturday -

6:00pm EST - Turf Classic game.

The matches have been moved to a weekly time for a greater focusing of the player base. This should be big and fun, so be sure to show up.

8:00pm EST - Rabbit Chase in Sheep Cloning Facility.

As always. Hopefully won't lag so bad today. Everyone is blaming the Starr Report for a net-wide lag; let's hope this is the problem and it's not a new problem with VIE GWest. The game is really fun in the old Chaos map. Please don't leave the Turf game for this unless you are genuinely bored, as I don't like the idea of the SCF having any negative effects on other Vangel-run VIE zones...also Turf kicks the shit out of Running games. ;)

Don't let the bastards grind you down.

- The Cult Is Alive -
The page is finally up for the Cult of the Final Call. If you'd like to take an active and long term part in preserving and lengthening the life of Subspace, even after the thrill of being in a cult wears off, then get involved and head on over to the CFC page. I'm sure after reading the literature half of you will pull out. We'll deal with you punks later. ;)
The first CFC project goes into full effect today. As I said in my last Minefield update: We are going to reinvent Alpha Zone. It might even be fun! :o My thanks to Cybrid, QA Man, and SubSpecies for the early pimping before I even asked for it. :)

    This is who we are.

- The Return of General Rage -
No, not to the game. He has more or less retired from Subspace, but he has returned to the Mapmakers Guild. I kind of talked him into rejoining as a matter of principle. Let it be known that the MMG treats its retirees and sabbaticalists well. ;) For those who arrived late,  General Rage is the author of the first ever player-designed Turf Zone map, which I still consider to be the finest of its kind. I believe it was also the first map to sport a custom border. Welcome back man; it's an honor to have you.

Meanwhile, keep ur eyes peeled for our eleventh member, coming soon.

- Rabbit Chase, 8:00pm Eastern, VIE Sheep Cloning GWest -
Proudly featuring the classic original Rod Humble map for Chaos Zone. Nuff said. Be there.

- Gommy Rules -
I was just about to try and start something like this when Gommy posts a reminder on his page that it already exists! The Subspace Calendar at Destruction 98 is a kick ass idea. It's an experiment at this stage; please don't abuse it, but do post your events. I've already posted two. :)

A few responses to Gommy's recent posts, while I'm at it. Magazines belong in plastic wrap. It's the newstand's responsibility to see that there is an open copy available for browsing! As for Shanoyu's recent WZ map, I would like to contest the assertion that the errors which plagued it last Sunday had to do with Shan's "innocence as a player". While I don't take offense at this remark, I must point out that I spent several hours helping Shanoyu with the map and didn't catch the mistakes either. More interestingly, Arctos' first map contained, in its earliest version (which I consider the finest War Zone map ever made), contained three closed rooms large enough to be used as bases. The point being that type of thing is an uncommon problem that really occurs only in the course of untraditional mapping styles, and I've never seen the same mistake made the same way twice.

Lastly, I should mention that these closed rooms were not the only problem with Shanoyu's map, and that I have seen it in other maps as well. In War Zone, you cannot have a one-tile gap that a ship can't fly up against. Players need to be able to get within one tile of the flag, or it is impossible to pick up. If you have a three tile long vulching hole, there is of course only (in theory) about a 1/900,000 chance that a flag will drop there...but if you have a lot of them and some are near a flag chamber, you are asking for trouble.

Oh yeah, the punk updated his page again. See?

Oh yeah! Wait, I have to mention this. Something screwy about his host causes me to never see his updated unless I reload the page once. I have no idea why this happens, but as long as he has no hit counter I won't suspect anything. ;)

- Welcome to the CFC -
The Cult of the Final Call is in effect. If you are already a member, you probably know it. Details of the First Phase will be made known within the next few days.
For those not yet enlightened: The Cult of the Final Call is a society of Subspace players sworn to be present at the last Subspace game ever--and to work at preventing that game from ever happening. If you are interested, please contact me. Be warned that this is not a Fun Club; it is work. First Phase involves the reinventing of Alpha Zone. Stay tuned.

- Chaos Zone West, Rest in Peace -
Not the original Chaos West, I hasten to point out. The original Chaos West died early this year. The former name of the zone that was taken down yesterday was none other than Chaos Nevada. Yup, we killed both Chaos West *and* Chaos Nevada.

Hadar put up a sad but positive post at The Wormhole, in which he was especially nice to me (which I appreciate) and Xirphoid, who I must say very much deserved it. While Hadar often took my recommendations for map and settings changes, and was kind enough to run my map for a month or so, the zone was propped up by him and Xirphoid, who with the exceptions of Chakotay and Peasant's Paladin are probably the hardest working Vangels in the game. I hope very much that they are given ownership of other zones. Chaos West was one of the most progressive and well handled zones in Subspace, and was in my opinion largely the victim of circumstances beyond its control. In some small part, it was the victim of its own stubbornness. Hadar and Xirphoid have a right to be disappointed in this game and its players; I hope they won't let it get to them as is sometimes the case where unsuccessful zones are concerned.

In honor of Chaos West I've put up the original CZW map in Sheep Cloning, as it originally appeared before Jolly Roger's changes. If anyone would rather see the altered map put up in its place, just holler. (See story below.)

- Sheep Cloning Plans -
In the wake of the CZW massacre, I am a bit unsettled and have decided on a slightly more conservative approach for Sheep Cloning Facility, at least until we've managed to build back enough of a player base to get decent participation in the message board and so forth.

Scenarios are still going to run. It will always be on a Saturday evening at 8pm Eastern. Other than those scenarios, the SCF will be running a Rabbit Chase game with more or less traditional VIE settings (except for the Shark).

I will be changing the map on a weekly basis to keep things interesting, but nothing too radical. Next up is the Arctos RZ map which hasn't yet been hosted at VIE, then I may go back to my own Chaos map, which was fairly popular back whenever.

Game time from this day forth is 8pm Eastern, every day.
All scenarios will run Saturday at 8pm Eastern.
Also, don't forget Turf Classic at 6pm Eastern, Saturday and Sunday...
...and WSL Special Events on Wednesdays at 10pm Eastern.

- Quake Sucks -
I've been playing Quake for a few days and have basically found it to be totally unsatisfying. Imagine Subspace with no greening, where all you did was fight over T20/J12 style safe zones with a flag in them.....oh wait, that's Trench Wars. ;) Sorry guys, no offense, but thank GOD this game gets deeper than that. I know Quake goes a little deeper also, if you look hard enough, but so far I've not found a single reason to feel I have something invested in my character. If he dies, there is no consequence, and you are playing against a whole lot of people who also know there is no real consequence associated with dying. It's not even a little bit scary. I'm an old Doom player. I play Quake at hardest level with the lights off and never cheat. I'm not all that good; it takes me an hour to get through a new level, but 4 times out of 5 I'll have done it without dying. It's the suspense I love about that game, and being scared shitless, backed up against a corner for five minutes because you don't know what's down which hall. This is totally incompatible with the multiplayer experience, and I am getting jaded pretty fast.

Mind you, I don't feel I am being unkind to Quake when I say these things, really. A few months back I read a Game Fan review of the Saturn port of Quake, and was overjoyed to see someone defend it in its single player incarnation. In single player game, Quake is in fact my second favorite computer game, so I don't think I am out of line in saying that multiplayer Quake, in my experience,.is extremely overrated.

I still love it though. }:) Just wanted to reassure whoever cares that I haven't left y'all for the gayass 3D-shooter scene.

- The Gommy Home Page? -
Gommy is thinking of giving his SCF page a real name--a pretty good idea in my opinion since it's not really about the SCF too often. ;) This is of course largely my fault since the SCF has been kind of boring recently. He has a voting script up and stuff, and a suggestions box. Personally I'd like to see him keep a personal page with little side pages for SCF and mapping and so forth. Did you know he actually has four pages? Bet you can't find em!

Gommy, name ur page after that box in Hellraiser, since all your maps look like it. ;)

8 September 1998
Welcome back!
When I am king you will be fast against the wall
with your opinion which is of no consequence at all.
-
- Doh -
I forgot to mention that I was lelaving for the weekend and some change. I hope I didn't lose my audience. :( More frequent updating from now on, I promise!

- Neo Mapper God Shanoyu -
As the first order of business I want to congratulate my badass squadmate Shanoyu on getting his new map up in War Zone--never an easy task, and all the more difficult because of some last minute technical changes that needed to be taken care of. My thanks to Peasant's Paladin for putting up with the mess and to all the players in WZ who have been supportive of the new map. I only hope I have a chance to really play in it before some jizz eating Terrier pilot edits it and sticks a bunch of L3 force gates in the bases.

- Chaos What? -
Smitty74 stuck a new/old map up for testing yesterday in Chaos East. This is actually a remixed version of the old Battle Drone, partly the work of Jolly Roger, though he had two interns work on it too, since he is getting kind of rusty. ;) Since I just got home I haven't had a chance to play in it, but since I am a War Zone player I am blessed with the rare ability to judge a map's play value just by looking at an image of it! Well....maybe not, but I will say that I am pretty pissed about what was done to  the block of tunnels along the northern wall, in service to a new structure that could easily have been placed elsewhere. Also, the horizontal running tunnels in the lower left have been replaced with....dots? This is not Chaos; this is totally in service to the kind of players who panic when they fall into a tunnel. Let's get real here; open space is NOT neutral or the default environment in this game; the proper terrain for Chaos especially is variety. Tunnel rats don't like spawning in open space any more than swarmers and stat junkies like to warp into a tunnel. The enemies of Chaos tunnel systems really need to grow up and learn to play ALL of this game.

- WSL Event -
Lately there is no better place to be on Wednesday nights than in VIE WS League MEast. This week's event looks like it may be the best yet--Team Rumble, which will start out as a one on one match and escalate into a full fledged brawl. This is going to be a lot of fun. See you there, right? RIGHT? :) Check out the WSL Special Events page for rules and times.

All the dates are wrong in the links table below. Sorry. I'll fix em tonite.

- Chaos East Update -
I missed the beginning of the meeting, but the plan seems to be that each of the challenger maps will get a week's worth of testing in the zone. This was agreed upon last night at the CZE Vangel meeting, but the map apparently won't be chosen until Monday. It will be decided on by a Vangel vote. Maps in the running include new work my Shanoyu, Xirphoid, and myself, my old map, a remix by FusionGT, and a collaborative remix by Jolly Roger, Map Maker, and Paintshop. It's possible that Slappy's remix map will be considered also, since it is far better than anything even the best team of mappers is likely to come up with in the space of a week.

One thing I find very disturbing is that, for some reason, the CZE Vangels are still talking about whatever map "wins" after all these tests becoming the permanent map for the zone. Not only is this flat-out silly, but it seems designed to stack favor towards the Battle Drone map, since no one in their right mind would want to be rid of it forever.

If the Vangels are willing to consider changing the map forever, why else shy away from changing it occasionally?

At any rate, look for a new map to go up in Chaos East on Monday or Tuesday. I'm predicting it will be Shanoyu's level, with the old Rod/Jolly remix in a close second place. I frankly wouldn't mind seeing mine up either, tho. ;)

- WSL Reminder -
Remember that cool All the King's Men event is happening tonight in VIE WS League MEast. The zone is open to the public, the event is casual (no signups or anything), all you have to do is read the rules and then show up. 10:00pm Eastern.

- Sifl and Olly! -
I love this program! Was there some conspiracy to not tell me about this show? I was sure I must be very square and arriving on the scene far too late. In fact, the show has been running for quite some time now with few people seeming to know about it--the same weird word-of-mouth strategy MTV tried with AMP a couple years ago, I guess. This show is the funniest thing I have seen in years. Yeah, they're sock puppets. Surprisingly, they aren't anywhere near as rude as you might expect from sock puppets that have their own show on MTV. In fact, they're quite friendly, and they're cute as hell. Everyone on the show is cute as hell, actually--simply the best acting by sock puppets in recent memory. You'll see what I mean. ;)

- A Warning to Map Makers -
I submitted the following article to Warstrike as news in response to Reaps' complaints at having overwritten a map-in-progress by entering Witch Race, whose map is called local.lvl and thus downloaded over his own work. The article was never posted, and since I consider these important issues that a lot of people--especially new mappers and zone owners--aren't aware of, I am posting it here. Please feel free to repost it in any form you see fit. People lose work all the time because of these easily avoided mistakes.

After reading Reaps' August 9th article about Witch Race, I thought I ought
to chime in with something that actually should have been said a long time
ago. NEVER save your maps as local.lvl or they will be overwritten. Not
might be; WILL BE. The problem with Witch Race is extremely common.

On a similar note, any simple filenames like level.lvl, castle.lvl, wzmap.lvl,
and so forth are very, very likely to be destroyed sooner or later. Give your
map a proper name--a LONG name--and use that as the filename, even it
it's i-dunno-what-to-call-this.lvl; put your name and the date in it if you can't
    think of anything else.

As for those of you running servers, please be courteous in the names you
choose for your maps. Those mapmakers new enough to the trade to
overlook the local.lvl pitfall are exactly the people who might spend dozens
of hours to get only a few quadrants designed. Losing that much work can
be devastating. I'd also like to point out to zone owners at VIE (and possibly
other server groups) that the ?setlevel command causes your local file to
overwrite onto whatever the server is using. That is, it uses the same name.
When I uploaded my Chaos map, I overwrote VectorBoy's St. Patty's Day
map--in turn, anyone who entered the zone downloaded my map over St.
Patty's Day. All copies of this map could potentially have been lost.
(Fortunately, Silent Dragon had a copy.)

If you have lost a published map for any of these reasons, get in touch with
me. I have a huge collection of player zone maps and may be able to help.
For anyone who loses an unpublished local.lvl to the Witch Race demon,
I strongly recommend Norton Utilities, which can sometimes recover files
    that have been completely overwritten.

And if $70 seems like too much to pay for recovering a lost level, you need
to spend more time making maps. ;)

Since I wrote that, something else has come to my attention. It is very important that mapmakers back up their work on a frequent basis, even if they are taking precautions against all of these hazards. It isn't enough to just have the last version before you made changes; one should try, as much is reasonably convenient, to keep two good current copies of a work in progress. Never mind the fact that files can become corrupt anyway. With Subspace maps, you are dealing with tilesets that frequently become corrupted through one process or another. Loading in a tileset that is a pixel too small or too many colors will DESTROY your map. The damage will be permanent and you will never recover that level file. A few simple but important rules to follow.

Don't open a tileset in your graphics editor directly out of a .lvl file unless you are certain that the file isn't corrupt. Open it in SSME first to make sure it is a good file.

Each time you save your tileset, make a quick check of its statistics. Make sure it is 304x160 pixels and 256 colors.

Make a habit of saving an extra copy into local.lvl every time you are done working. This will save your ass more times than you might expect.

Remember what operating system we're using and how cheap 200k of hard drive space is. Save your map as einexile-chaos02-19980901-01.lvl or whatever. Keep organized and have that security of those recent versions to go back to. Even if you do absolutely nothing wrong, you will find your map files irreparably corrupted from time time time.

The up side of all this is that good mapmakers don't have to use a condom. ;)

- War Zone, Land of Cretins and Philistines -
While all hell was breaking loose on the Chaos East boards, a quiet minority was busy ramming a weird remix of T2-17's map through the WZ Vangels' feeble defenses. From what I understand, a few pseudo-elites approached Peasant's Paladin after the last Vangel meeting and, claiming some kind of membership (unofficial or assumed at best) in the SSSG, somehow convinced him to put up a revised version of the map.

This revision was not retooled by T2-17 or even with his permission but by someone who had not made a map before, and the result was a map in War Zone which contained poor base designs and a boatload of tiling errors. An even newer version has since been put up, correcting a few of these problems, but it will never be up to the caliber of T2-17's work. Yet another lesson in the long, ugly history of map tinkering by people who don't understand maps.

I haven't named the person responsible for the current map becaause he has agreed to ask its original author for permission.

The WZ Vangels are getting back on track from a fairly light summer of few issues and classic maps, so all this is understandable, even if the insult paid to the original work--and more importantly the stigma it will probably wear forever, preventing it from being used again--is about as close to unforgivable as you're likely to find a video game.

A more well organized group of Vangels, with a stricter voting and implementation system, would not have let this come about. Where there is confusion, there are people who will prey on it for their own means. The folks who run these zones are doing you a favor, and do NOT deserve this kind of disrespect. Please think twice next time before making life hell for the people who keep this game running.

And say goodbye to the second best War Zone map of all time. It's gone forever.

- Behold ! My New Links List -
I put this together for my own convenience and it's turned out to be a handy startup page, fast loading with no java or images, and reuses the same spawn window of ur browser. I'll be expanding both versions and probably adding a couple of longer types with non-Subspace junk on em. Requests and suggestions are welcome. Available in Verbose and Brief. Enjoy. :)

- Peasant's Paladin updated his Scribbles. -
This was a few days ago but I forgot to mention it. ;) Most notable here is the reappearance of the infamous How to Hack Password Protected Web Pages, a tutorial in many parts which caused a minor uproar at Maxig a few months back. It's interesting in that it doesn't actually give you any of the solutions. You learn by doing, so to speak, with only very subtle clues to help you along.

- Scenarios and the Billing Server  -
It turned out to be lucky indeed that I called off FlippMode's Kill the President scenario for this weekend and postponed it a couple of weeks. As I had feared (thought this wasn't my reason for postponing), the billing server was down while the scenario would have been running! If this keeps up and the SCF doesn't get some reasonable reassurance from VIE that it isn't a permanent thing, we're going to have to rethink our scenario plans. If I'm not mistaken, this is the third weekend in a row that there have been problems with the billing server.

If any server out there would be willing to furnish itself as a backup venue for SCF scenarios, so we have an alternative in the event that we come down to zero hour and can't run the scen I would really appreciate it. This would mean a couple hours of standby every other weekend, hopefully used rarely. Please contact me if you can help.

- The Battle Drone Question -
After much arguing over the fate of the Chaos East level, the CZE messageboards seem to have toned down some. We are left with a tangle of new maps and reworked old maps, and a lot of people who are pissed off that things either are going to change or aren't going to change. I got angrier and meaner than most, and took a few days off from the boards to get my head together. I've come up with a proposal I think might seem reasonable to everyone. If you're concerned about the future of Chaos East, please have a look and let's try to work something out.

- Yet Another New Gommy Map! -
Gommy has posted an image of his new level, a scenario design for FlippMode's upcoming Alien Resurrection. If you're too lame to read his awesome page on a regular basis, at least check out the map itself. This scenatio is going to kick ass. }:)

- All the King's Men -
After missing last weeks WSL event but sticking around long enough to see the huge turnout, I am convinced that hallucination's special events in World Subspace League are the best thing this game has seen in quite some time. This kind of exciting, friendly and casual competition is exactly what Subspace needs.

For those not familiar with League stuff, I sympathize, because I've only been there a few times myself and barely have an idea of how it works, but don't lose interest that fast, because the zone is open on Wednesdays, and at night the special events are run. These are open to everyone; the only requirement is that you make yourself aware of the rules and respect them while the game is going on.

This week's event is called All the King's Men. It sounds like a lot of fun; if you have a problem with me and want to mine repel me a few times, you know where I'll be this Wednesday night. ;)
From the WSL Special Events page:

- Sorry Again -
I got a 3Dfx card on Saturday and in an unrelated story finally got around to installing Independence War. Somehow I managed not to play Subspace for a few days. ;) Mother of God is this thing amazing... watching the Earth and Moon zoom by as you approach relativistic speeds, with your wingman disappearing ahead of you and reappearing from behind you. The way the ships look is phenomenal; this is the first space battle game I've seen that really looks good enough to be a movie. Oh, and this screenshot below is from the software emulated version. Voodoo enhanced looks even sweeter. I'll get into the insane complexity of the game play as soon as I actually understand it.

- BREAKING NEWS -
I haven't even had a chance to read this yet except for just a short tease, but I will say it looks goddam great. Rod Humble has put up a set of short SF stories, Cutter 1 through Cutter 5, with the sixth in the series on its way. Check them out over at Humbling America.

- Pop Quiz: How many mapmakers are Vangels for Chaos East? -
The growing controversy over a map change for CZE (a move which I would cautiously support) has somehow turned ugly and changed shape into a discussion of how the Battle Drone should be changed. All varieties of cretins who have never made a map in their life are rushing to suggest alterations. "Take out the maze" and "a few more structures like J12" are two of my favorite suggestions from today's posts.
Never mind the obvious question of whether or not it's proper to edit someone else's work without his blessing--how about we have several newbie map designers get together and learn to use SSME by taking out their aggressions on personal peeves they have with the landslide most popular Subspace level ever made?
I am doing my part to see that all hell breaks loose on the Chaos East Messageboard. Be sure and chime in as well if map issues are your thing.

- Sorry -
For some reason I always update least when I have the most free time, I guess because a day off lends itself to long activities that leave little time to mess around on the computer, or maybe it's just that I can get more into actually playing. I actually have had Independence War for nearly a week now and haven't even installed it; my only experience of it so far has been through the demo. :/ Expect a full review of that sometime soon.

- Cat Out of Bag -
The MMG page is back up and running. I was tired the other night, and kind of pissed about a map related issue, so I linked to the new site in a messageboard post and now people know where it is, so I might as well make everything clear. The new Mapmakers Guild Home Page is up at Warstrike, but it is not yet finished. The vaults are not there yet, and some of the member pages need updating.

- Kill the President Postponed -
The scenario we were set to run in Sheep Cloning on Saturday is not going to happen for at least another two weeks. We're too sorely lacking in propaganda for the poor thing, and as a result of that (partially my fault) we've only barely had enough signups to run the thing if everyone shows up, which obviously never happens.
The important thing I would like to point out here is that, in order for us to run scenarios with any more complexity and involvement to them than the WSL events already provide, the first thing we need is a person willing to set them up. The people arranging for future scens are going to lose interest if no one bothers to attend this one. (Mind you, I am a big fan of the weekly WSL events.)
We are short on help at the SCF, and several of the people who usually get involved with SCF things have been busy elsewhere in the game. If you would like to get seriously involved with this game--and by that I mean in a capacity which is often thankless and frustrating--and you're willing to scratch others' backs in order to get yours scratched in return, even when you aren't personally interested in their projects.....if you want to be deeply involved in this game in a focused way and on a long term basis, contact me.

- Gommy updated his kick ass SCF page. -
As usual, lots of good reading. Maps and general Subspace stuff as well as personal notes. This has quickly become one of my favorite pages. Even if you think the SCF sucks, read it. ;)

- Correction -
I screwed up the link yesterday for Kill the President signups. Thanks to Shanoyu for alerting me to this lameness. Signups this time really will go to FlippMode. Sorry for screwing up your scenario, man. :)
For a reminded of what the hell I'm talking about, see yesterday's news.

- Circle Turf, Round One -
Yesterday's premiering of Chakotay's new Turf Map in the SCF was not quite the success that I'd hoped for in terms of player count, but it was a success insofar as the hall fights we had in the base ring were damned intense and a lot of fun. One thing I've noticed about this map is the ominous, epic character of the conflict owing to the circular design. Instead of taking a linear path a round the map, often you will be very close the the enemy physically, but a long way off as far as travel time is concerned. With only a wall between you, you race several sectors to the nearest juncture. Usually this pits an open field on one side against a tight maze on the other. Also because of this, there's not nearly as much flanking as the Gigakiller map provides, but you'll have to watch your back for long range approaches from several different directions. This is really a first for Turf Zone; I can see bottlenecks where not two but three or possibly four fronts will converge--the potential for a real bloodbath. Although I love Giga's map, I hope we get to play full scale in this level soon. I think it's going to be damned good.
Round two is today at 6:00pm Eastern, in (yup, you guessed it) the Sheep Cloning Facility.

- MMG is set to return any second now. -
I know I mentioned this a few days ago, but I really mean it this time. ;) It's been a long haul, but the page is nearly done updating and may well be back up at its new location by the time you read this. Check back here for the link when it happens.

- Thanks for nothing; we'll miss you too. -
Pent has closed SubCenter for good after two months of inactivity. From Pent's heart-wrenching farewell to the Subspace community: "nothing really cool is happening in Subspace anymore, therefore I will take my site down and another site with the same name will be up by someone I don't know, but it will be called SubCenter, so bye."
    Don't count on it.

- Independence War is out! -
More commonly known as iWar, this game--and you can rub this prediction in my face if it does not come to pass--this game will be the model for the first great 3D space combat mmpog. Whenever the hell that happens. For the first time, fighting in three dimensional world, I find that I can maintain my sense of space and direction. This sensation, mixed with a wonderful feeling that there is no up or down, the feeling of vast distances all around, make this the best new game I've come upon since Subspace. Don't worry, it's not multiplayer just yet--it doesn't need to be.
The look of it is amazing, and I speak from the perspective of someone without a 3D card to speak of. Although the accelerated graphics are unbelievable, the makers of this game pride themselves also on their software acceleration, and feature screenshots from that version at their page alongside the 3Dfx shots.
On the other hand, people have called it boring--and they're right insofar as it is uneventful for significant stretches of time. It's certainly not for everyone, but they're doing something unique and effective here--game play over realism, but with realism commanding the atmosphere. You will certainly spend some time waiting for things to happen, but when something does happen you may well be more involved for all the time you spent approaching the action and watching it unfold.
Particle Systems, the maker of the game, has set up a special Independence War website full of screenshots and other information. The demo is a complete mission from the game , nice and long, plus a training course. 22 megs but definitely worth the trouble. Hey, I was the first Subspace player to get sick of StarCraft....trust me on this one. ;)

- T2-17 Map Creates Chaos -
I have never in this game seen such a disgusting display as the reaction to the map change yesterday in War East. God forbid we should spend a few days playing in a map we predict we won't like and actually see first-hand how the base wars and chases play out. I was shocked also by the narrow minded assumptions made about the bases. No sooner had several elites finished calling the R17 structure impenetrable than it was stormed and taken by a public frequency. From several people I saw complaints along the line of "You can't tell where the bases are." This would all be fine if not for the abject lack of civility, the absence of any class or open minded approach to the situation. Countless people declaring that "this map sucks" before they had even finished greening their first spawn. The world ends tomorrow and I have to spend the last 24 hours of my life playing in a problematic map! Somebody help!
I didn't want this map up either. I argued against this map at the WZVangels meeting ("it was announced at warstrike" - "wtf is warstrike?") and can see--nay predict--a number of problems with the bases, but for God's sake, when one of your own--especially one whose work you know from the past and owe the benefit of the doubt--spends dozens or maybe hundreds of hours on a level for you to play in and asks for nothing in return, you owe the map, and the mapper, and indeed the game itself, far more respect than that.
I hope you people choke on those old VIE maps.

- Today's Schedule Again -
Just a repost of the cool stuff going down today, for those who didn't see my post yesterday. All times are Eastern.

now - Signups begin for FlippMode's Kill the President scenario.
now - A first look at Shanoyu's spankin' new War Zone map.
4:00pm - Dueling tournament in iNet Duelzone. See the iNet page for details.
6:00pm - Chakotay's Turf Zone map goes up in the Sheep Cloning Facility.

 - What exactly is Kill the President? -
(a mini-FAQ)
Q: WTF?
A: Kill the President is, as you're probably sick of reading but I get a kick out of saying it, the first full blown VIE scenario in over a year. It is throught up and designed by FlippMode and will be hosted in the Sheep Cloning Facility.
Q: What exactly is a scenario?
A: A scenario is a moderated event, usually with special map or settings, which does not play out as a normal zone but instead works around a story. Pilots role-play a bit, and each team has a defined objective. In the case of Kill the President, one side's objective is to carry out an assassination, while the other side's objective is to escort its target to safety.
Q: Do I need to know someone or have special access somewhere or know what the hell I'm doing in order to play?
A: Hell no. If you are reading this, you can sign up and play. The only requirement we make is that, if you do sign up, you read the rules and show up for the game at the time it runs.
Q: What is the Sheep Cloning Facility?
A: Just the old fashioned name for VIE Sheep Cloning GWest. Use your Find Servers button to add it to your Favorite Servers list. It's always open to the public unless we are actually running a scenario. (That should be a few hours out of the month.)
Q: So how do I sign up?
A: Send an email to FlippMode with the name you will be using when you play in the game. (It must be exact to the letter for inclusion in a permissions file, so you can get in during the scenario.)
Q: Where are the rules and story and all that?
A: Check back here this weekend and I'll tell you. It should be done by Monday at the latest.
Q: Isn't this in kind of poor taste?
A: I don't think so. The story is based in the future in an Subspace universe and has no basis in Earthly reality, historical or hypothetical or otherwise.
Q: When is all this going down?
A: Next Saturday night. We may have a King of the Hill game or two on Friday as a sort of "election" to decide who gets to be the President.
Q: Do I need to know anything else?
A: Absolutely nothing.

 - Shanoyu's War Zone Map -
Personally, after today I don't know why he bothered making it. Nonetheless, it did get a strong reception after being shown at the WZVangels meeting, impressing a number of people. That's right, Shanoyu ov the mighty Space Police sold out the ol' Minefield and showed his map to some people before my exclusive teaser pic, but it was a limited showing so I forgive him. ;) The map goes up in the Sheep Cloning Facility on Sunday.

    Shanoyu's 1337 WZ map

- The Hunter and The Hunted! -
I should have mentioned this yesterday but I don't normally keep up on League stuff. League has seemed kind of beyond me for so long that I forgot the event was open to the public. This was an interesting set of matches between turrets and swarms that took place in World Subspace League, a.k.a. VIE WS League MEast. I'm really glad that I'm probably going to be able to fly in the zone on a semi-regular basis as a guest; on first impression it reminds me a lot of the old Speed Zone, from a year ago. Good players, friendly attitudes, minimal whining and very little politics--as if all of a sudden the fate of the world did not hinge on whether or not someone was lagging. For anyone who prefers to play Subspace against other players who actually love it, I strongly recommend these weekly matches. They are generally held on Wednesday evenings, although the zone is open to the public all day Wednesday. For information on each week's event, keep an eye on their page.

 - Hyksos' Hanger -
Another stylin' page no one told me about. ;) It's just moved to Warstrike and so a few of the links are mussed, but it's a good, frequently updated page, noteworthy especially for its special attention to issues for European players. Hyksos--yet another member of the ever cool One Spirit doing the web thing--contributed an article to my Minefield Weekly before I closed it down, and his page is similarly highly readable. Have a look-see. :)

 - BAA! -
Gommy made a huge update to his Sheep Cloning Facility page, with a lot of information about the new scenario and his upcoming maps, plus his take on the WZVangels map contest and a long-past-due challenge to the VIE webmasters.

 - Omicron Sighting -
Since his departure from Subspace was not by his own will, I was hoping Omicron might pop in from time to time. Sure enough, Om appeared briefly on the Warstrike board yesterday. As it turns out, he's probably going to be able to log in from school every now and then. Head on over to the Warstrike Messageboard and give a shout.

- New Map in War East -
Well, Warhammer's map lost out due to some speculation about base strength, but was an easy second for the newest T2-17 map. The map change is going down as I write this, so be sure to spend some time in War East and check out T2-17's weird, revolutionary map. For those not in the know, T2-17 is the author of the map with the Blue Combs and B19 spiral which dominated War East for over three quarters of a year. He is also a master of the tileset, and the new map has a gorgeous, crisp look to it like nothing else I have seen. Well, what the hell am I doing here? Off I go.
Read more about the meeting probably pretty soon at Subspace Warstrike Com.

- Big Ol' Friday! -
Stuff that is going down tomorrow. Take the day off. :) Sorry if I'm forgetting anyone.

Dueling tournament in iNet Duelzone at 4pm Eastern. See the iNet page for details.
Chakotay's Turf Zone map goes up in the Sheep Cloning Facility at 6pm Eastern.
Signups begin for FlippMode's Kill the President, the first VIE scenario in a year.
A first look at Shanoyu's spankin' new War Zone map, right here.
There may well be a new map up in War Zone East. See story below.

Keep your dials tuned to the Minefield for up the the minute info, and maybe even a little opinion or two, here and there. ;)

- War Zone Vangel Meeting Today -
As reported at Subspace Warstrike Com, the War Zone Vangels are holding an IRC meeting tonight at 5pm Eastern in #wzvangels on EFnet. This will be the first hardcore meeting since Peasant's Paladin left for his tour of duty with the Shining Path in beleaguered southwestern Peru. War East has been running classic maps for two months now and PP is eager to put up a newer map; many others likely feel the same way. Mappers are encouraged to bring their stuff to the meeting, but not by me.
Why? Because whatever you have to show, Warhammer's second map is better. Have a look.
Moreover, this is a fairly old map, and none of his maps have been hosted on VIE servers. The result? It's been a while since we had a new map from Warhammer, arguably the second best WZ designer in the game. Support your fellow mapmakers and WZ pilots and don't contribute to great work going unrewarded.
Next time around, you go up against me. ;)
Get the level itself here while you're at it.

- And in yet another related story. -
The new MMG site is about to go back up, thanks to The Romulans' hard work on a cool looking new design. Keep your eyes peeled. The only thing delaying things now is me getting off my ass and writing the news setion. Meanwhile, I've updated my own MMG page to include newly-inducted Gommy on the members list, and made a few other changes here and there.

 - Old Maps Wanted -
I've been collecting maps for quite some time and probably have one of the most complete collections in the game. I'm gearing up to put together a giant map guide and could use some help, plus I would like to have early versions and rare scenario maps for the sake of preserving and archiving them as well as for my own satisfaction. I am especially looking for the early version of the classic VIE Turf Zone map and the Sheep Cloning Facility test/scenario maps that ran from last April to last June. I'm also sure I've missed a few good player zone maps. If you think you have something I would be interested in even if you're pretty sure it's junk, please contact me with a description of the map. Don't send me levels through the mail or I will probably experience problems with my disk quota. Thank you in advance.

 - Fireteam Update from Moby -
Moby has been playing a lot of Fireteam beta test and was kind enough to update me on the happenings in the game. If you're interested, here is what he had to say. Many thanks to Moby of course. :)

There is a new phenomenon happening in Gunball (one of the four games in Fireteam).... people have figured out that a methodical, defensive approach to the game actually gives the best chance of winning! So what they're doing is protecting their ballcarrier in the back, while advancing slowly towards the opposing goal. The three guys basically blast away at anything while the ball carrier slowly moves up collecting medpatches and running away from enemy fire.

Of course, this often means lots of games only have 1 touchdown, and the opposing team might never even have a chance to get possession!! Changes are being implemented right now to prevent this style of play (which ruins the spirit & fun of gunball) by putting in a "shot-clock". The ballcarrier will have a certain amount of time to pass the halfway mark or else he will lose the ball (fumble). We'll see if this works, I'm sure there will be lots of tweaking along the way.

As for the game in general, the beta is going great (aside from occasional latency issues). The game seems to over-emphasize medpatches... these are like slow-acting full-charge greens in Subspace. If you have an abundance of them, you can take LOADS of punishment without dying. It seems to eliminate some of the strategy if the guy with the most medpatches wins, as is usually the case. Aiming and evading fire doesn't seem to be as important as it is in Subspace at this point. Some of the powerups are unbalanced IMHO as well... the auto-turret is a HUGE advantage in certain games and in certain locations. It's like having an extra teammate almost! We'll see how Multitude tweaks the game further to make it more fun and strategic before the final verdict is in though.

 - Another Awesome Page -
I've overlooked another great page at Shanky, which also hosts SS Impact. Mine Go Boom's server help page is the most in-depth and explanatory page of its kind I've seen yet, and if that weren't enough it's full of great advice, too. I've placed it on the links blob down below.

A belated happy birthday to Prince Darien. Hope you enjoyed it. :) Also, welcome back to Peasant's Paladin from his 10 week exile in the mountainous regions of Peru, where I hear he spent his time burning peasant villages and herding prisoners into ditches. Way to go PP! I wish they had this when I was a boy. We missed you, man; don't do that stuff again. ;)
And on the bad side of things, Omicron is losing internet access and won't be able to play Subspace anymore or do much of anything else. Omicron was instrumental in the building of Maxig and Warstrike, ran one of the best Subspace pages by himself for a while, and is a good player. His departure is not voluntary and so there is probably a reasonable chance of his returning eventually, but for now this is looking like just about the blackest day Subspace has known. I'm sorry to see you go, Om, and my sincerest thanks for all you've done for this game.

- What a fun weekend! -
The downed billing server provided a lovely opportunity to see the Subspace community make the best of a bad situation, pulling together and keeping their heads held high during hard times when others might well have faltered. It's this kind of can-do love for the game and zest for life that makes me really feel good about being an, um. Well. Makes me feel like neg killing, actually.
    Among this weekends refreshing events:

    WSL games canceled.
    WarZone League matches canceled.
No one showed up for the Addiction Zone game in Jackpot.
Planned game and newbie night in Turf Classic - R.I.P.

We need not thank the billing server for this weekend; it's not VIE's fault, but the players' fault. None of these events needed to be cancelled. Nullified in some cases? Sure, why not--but called off? Let's just NOT PLAY SUBSPACE because the billing server is broken? Come on! How many of you are actually playing not because you enjoy it but because of your stats? We all know that this information will eventually vanish off the face of the Earth, and is only important in the first place because of the game itself. So what exactly was the problem?

 - Great Page I've Overlooked -
It's not often that someone writes and asks me to pimp their page and I end up going there and feeling like an ass for not linking to it already. Fatal Image's SS Impact is a damned good page, a credit to the game, and I have to apologize to Fatal for ignoring it this long. The page promises daily updates at least and delivers 99% of the time--easily the best updated page in Subspace. Read it always.

 - First VIE Scenario in a Year Coming Up -
FlippMode's Kill the President scenario is all ready to go and is set for Saturday, August 29. Signups begin this Friday. Watch the skies for more on this. We'll have a page up soon, and signups will be starting on this Friday. It's a unique idea: A frequency of bodyguards protects the President from a smaller team of more powerful assassins while trying to get him to safety. Here's the catch: The President is on his own frequency and can be killed by the bodyguards as easily as he can by the assassins...

 - Map News -
As mentioned elsewhere on this page (sorry for all the overlapping stories but i don't know how else to do this) Chakotay's new Turf Zone map, entitled Circle Turf, ran for a short while in the Sheep Cloning Facility. It is awesome! The striking visual presence and beauty of the level had had me distracted from game play issues; where I did consider them, I expected to be disappointed. In fact there is some great level design here. With only seven entrances to the outer base ring, there should be come concentrated and nasty bottleneck fights when the time comes. The center neg-war base, now a staple of post-VIE Turf maps, looks like a classic fight as well, a great diversion for a small arena. My most heartfelt raised finger to all of you in Turf Classic who knew I was running this but didn't bother to come check it out. I don't see why you feel welcome in TC if you can't show some respect for the person who set it up. You'll have another chance when the map goes up again in earnest, this Friday at 6pm EST.
In other news, Shanoyu (ov the mighty Space Police!) has completed the first draft of his War Zone map, which is looking pretty sweet as well--damned impressive for a first map, and full of interesting ideas. Shanoyu is actively pursuing Mapmakers Guild membership hot on the heels of Gommy's recent induction, and has a nice looking Chaos Zone map in the works as well. I'll be putting up an image of the WZ map on this coming Friday. It makes its SCF testing premiere Sunday morning.

 - BAA! -
Silent Dragon updated the SCF page, and I've moved that to the main links section in place of my own SCF page. Gommy has also updated his SCF page and I've added that down there as well. For your reference, Facilities #1 and #2 were at Warzone and Maxig but have since been abandoned or destroyed. Facility #3 is mine, #4 is Gommy's, and #5 is the new official one. If you can't figure this out it's probably just that you have better things to do or it's not 2:30 in the morning right now.
We ran the Circle Turf map for a while but I took it down because I wanted to give it a proper treatment with an organized game. What's up at the moment is a racing map; I'm testing settings and playing with ideas for the Reaper's Circuit scenario. The god-awful eyesore that was up for the last week or so was my followup to the first Bomberman map. Anyone else want to take a shot at this? Because I give up. :P

 - Weekend SCF Events -
This is of course assuming that the billing server is running. If not, I will just have to PLAY SUBSPACE AS USUAL. (grumble). Just a rundown of all the ramble and blather I've hidden in random places around this update so you can actually make sense of it. ;)

    Friday

Chakotay's Circle Turf map goes up for real. 6pm EST.
Signups begin for Kill the President scenario to be held August 29th.
Teaser image for Shanoyu's new War Zone map.

    Saturday

Circle Turf game begins again at 6pm EST. Yes, head to head with TC. Let's see where Chak's loyalties lie. ;)

    Sunday

Shanoyu's WZ map premieres for first test run. Noon EST.

 - Oh yeah, sorry. -
I saw someone complimenting this page as being updated on a daily basis, and it hasn't quite been like that lately. Maybe I'm making up for it some with the huge updates; maybe not. Anyway I'll try and get more on the ball about things.

- Chakotay Returns -
It seems that Chakotay is back in the game. Those of us who regularly fly in Turf Zone will likely have seen him by now, and he is once again maintaining the Turf Classic homepage. What you may not know is that, in his recent absence, Chakotay has been at work on a Turf map which has become one of the most unique and beautiful levels yet made for this game. I will be putting this map up Sunday around noon in the Sheep Cloning Facility for testing. For the time being, have a look at this.

- Gommy Joins the Mapmakers Guild -
I'm very pleased to announce that Gommy, best known for his small WZ map and the more recent Frontier Zone scenario which ran in Sheep Cloning a few weeks back, has joined the MMG as the first new recruit since HaNsMaN Jr and I joined way back in February. Have a look at Gommy's cool, weird maps here.

- Temporary MMG Page -
If you entered at minefield.html (which I prefer but don't insist upon), you might have noticed the new link from the Mapmakers Guild logo. This is not the official MMG page, which is still in transit after the fall of Maxig. Rather, it is my own page about the organization, with my own spin on maps and mappers and so forth. I will probably be incorporating it into my section of the official MMG site when it goes up, or I may just keep it here in case we ever run across the same problems. For now it's just a lot of map-oriented rambling and some cool links. Enjoy.

- Even More Map News -
The Romulans has a cool small map up in SEC Entertainment West, full of nasty dead ends and vulch corridors, plus some great open space fighting areas. This is a super zone so be sure and turn up ur frame rate knob to eleven. ;) Watch out for the naked chicks. Yes, there are naked chicks for banners in this zone. You probably knew that already, but I thought I'd mention it just in case. Not only can those things get you in trouble with the other slime inhabiting your dwelling, but they can make you bump into walls.
Xirphoid, one of the Chaos West vangels and author of what will probably be that zone's next map, has started work on a new Chaos style map today. It's just a skeleton right now but I will be keeping my eye on this one.
In the last few days, Shanoyu (ov the mighty Space Police!) also began work on a Turf map and a WZ map. They are both in the very beginning stages of design, but they look very promising.

- Addiction Zone Postponed This Weekend -
Betamax and D-Tox will not be around this weekend to run the Addiciton Zone game on Sunday. Instead, they urge us to hit VIE Jackpot at 3:00pm Eastern. Be there. :)

- Shade's Take -
LordShade, Chaos West turret fiend and fellow Space Police, has started a political column! Actually, he's calling it more along the lines of a talk show, but, we,, it's a political column. ;) It's pretty good, too. Kind of hard for me to judge when I no longer follow the news at all. He's doing it through an e-mail list. If you'd like to subscribe, contact him with your mail address in the message body.

- Subspace 2, *NOT* -
Rumor begets news story it seems. A post on Warstrike prompted QA Man of Subspace PCGaming Com to contact Blackie, and somehow he ended up with a response! Not my story though. Just passing along the good news. Go read Warstrike and PCGaming if you want to know what's up. :)

- Anyone still care about Star Wars? -
Of course you do! :) Not sure how widespread this news is in the popular media but I thought I ought to mention it here. The film thus far known only as Episode 1 will open on May 21, 1999. Lucas plans to control the release so that it only shows in the best theatres. Can you say ticket scalping? I'm predicting that small shantytowns will crop up around the ticket offices as far as a week in advance of zero hour. A shout out to the IMDB StudioBrief, from which I get most of that sort of news.

- More changes to the links table. -
I'm keeping the table itself reserved for frequently updated pages that I think make for good reading. The rest is below. I was asked a couple of times to put my mapfolio there and am putting Gommy's there as well. If you have one also, let me know so I can add it to the list.
11 August 1998
I'm back.
A man makes a picture, a moving picture. Through light projected he can see himself up close.
- Welcome to the Minefield -
Well, I give up. While the writing I received for the EMF Weekly was very good, there was not enough of it, and the Minefield Weekly didn't save me the kind of time I was hoping it might save me. It frankly had me spending even more time online, trying to gather submissions, structuring page sets, and worst of all just screwing around a lot because not doing the page depressed me.
I don't like not maintaining this page, and on other levels I think it should not have been gone for the time it was. Subspace has been kind of a wasteland lately. Most of the news pages have either been down, under construction, or distracted by server problems. Those of them that have stayed alive and healthy have not generally been covering things that I think are important. The last several weeks has given us a lot of bad news: The fall of Subspace Maxig Com and subsequent mess with the subpages, from which they still have not recovered; the departure of Chakotay and Baudchaser from the scene, unending troubles for Subspace.Net and the 2xT3 servers. Sheep Cloning Facility excepted, I kind of felt like I was abandoning the cause.
I also don't want to make this movie anymore. It's pretty well ruined for me. While things are working out okay, there are a lot of compromises that have had to be made for stupid reasons--reasons that could have been avoided with better planning. After many months of preproduction, I was talked into finally shooting this project despite an undependable crew with several important positions unfilled. Of course, I'd never made a movie before. I thought I could fill them and I can't, and have come to resent the movie pretty badly. It has ruined my Summer. I don't need an increased disassociation from Subspace adding to that resentment.
So the game is more important than my life's work. Go figure.
On that note, the most important reason I am back. I'd somehow forgotten how I look at the news archive for this page. I'd lost track of how it serves as a kind of diary to the game. Since the game is a large part of my life (and one of the few parts about which I am willing to write on the Web), it has functioned as a personal history, but I also think that because of its broad range of topics it serves also as a document for the game in general. I already hate the big hole I created there over the last three weeks. I don't want to expand on it.
So anyway, I'm back. Hi everyone. You have to watch what you say around me again. }:)

 - Please excuse the mess. -
I'll be spending the next few days getting my links in order and so forth. The EMF Weekly is in July's news archive.

- New SCF Pages -
While Silent Dragon was busy moving the SCF page to Warstrike, I decided to put up my own, not to replace his but for a temporary substitute and eventually just to have it as a personal page for my capacity as SCF Vangel. Gommy followed suit, putting up his own page focusing on his projects for the zone. I've also set up a Come.To redirector so that next time Silent decides to move the page (or his server ends up in an FBI building) people won't lose track of the existing pages. Always on the cutting esge, us sheepdogs. ;) So check out the pages already! Get involved in your damned game! Make a map, write a scenario, tell us what you think of the settings. Dolly IS watching u.

 - All Hail Destruction 98. -
I owe props to the folks at DS98. I neglected this page for a while because for some time it was not regularly updated, so it was always in the back of my mind. I only recently checked back and found it to be, before the return of Warstrike, the most reliable source of Subspace news. They have also been cool to this page and especially to the Sheep Cloning Facility. Be sure and check out the page, and remember to return there for at least part of your daily news dose.
- HELP! -
Silent Dragon is reworking the Sheep Cloning Facility and I just realized that some of the news is missing. These were the posts about The Dread Wooly being suspended and I really wanted to keep copies of them. If anyone out there can help me get this out of cache or something like that, I would really be grateful. If you've seen the posts I'm talking about, try connecting to subspace.maxig.com/scf and getting the news html out of your cache. Thank you in advance.
